Of Colombian origin but based in the UK, Omar Castaneda focuses his artistic practice on food. Much of his work uses food, animal tissue, and human body parts to address—visually and metaphorically—the intersection of competing cultural values brought about by food. The work Ripe Crisis was created for the art collective Food of War’s first Immersive Gastronomy Experience in Shoreditch. The work explores the biblical concept of the forbidden fruit and reflects on how the banana’s high nutritional content has made it a staple of the diet with harmful consequences for the environment.
