In Untitled (Banana Boat) (2021), Nash Caldera transforms the banana into a playful yet uncanny surrogate for the human body. Inspired by the popular inflatable “banana boat” rides pulled across the sea by jet skis, the painting captures the precarious choreography of balance, falling, and climbing back on again. The elongated banana form becomes a stand-in for collective movement and vulnerability, suggesting bodies suspended between pleasure, instability, and absurdity. Through exaggerated forms and bright colors, Caldera embraces humor not as superficial decoration, but as a way of reflecting on how human bodies navigate motion, risk, and displacement.

The work’s encasement within a traveling vacuum bag further deepens its meditation on mobility. Commonly used to compress belongings while traveling, the vacuum bag transforms the painting itself into a portable object, as though memory, identity, and experience must be folded, packed, and transported across borders. The banana—already a fruit historically tied to migration, colonial trade routes, and transnational circulation—becomes here a humorous but poignant metaphor for the traveling body: compressed, displaced, resilient, and perpetually in motion.
