In El baile (2024), Studio Lenca shifts the presence of the banana from explicit motif to atmospheric condition. The painting’s saturated greens and yellows, along with its sweeping, organic forms, evoke a vegetal landscape that subtly recalls the visual and symbolic world of the banana without depicting it directly. Rather than appearing as a discrete commodity—as in other works by the artist—the fruit here becomes diffused into color, rhythm, and environment. This displacement is significant: the banana no longer functions as ornament or object, but as a latent structure that informs the space in which the figures move.

At the center of the composition, two elongated bodies engage in a dynamic, almost choreographic exchange. Their gestures—stylized yet expressive—foreground the body as a site of agency rather than labor. In this sense, El baileextends Studio Lenca’s ongoing engagement with diasporic identity by shifting the narrative from extraction to embodiment. If the banana has historically indexed systems of exploitation and circulation, here its trace is reabsorbed into a scene of movement, pleasure, and self-definition. The body that once labored within those economies now dances, occupying space on its own terms and transforming inherited histories into gestures of presence and resilience.
