Óscar Figueroa

The harmful effects of pesticides are the thread that connects many of the works of Óscar Figueroa Chaves, who has dedicated himself to exploring the legacy of the plantation economy in his birth country, Costa Rica, for more than a decade. On this occasion the artist created “canvas paintings” whose frames overflowed with blue plastic bags, spilling, and spreading across the floors of the galleries. The overwhelming, almost invasive effect of the sea of blue plastic covering the floors alluded to the destructive effects of the United Fruit Company in Central America.
