Fallen Fruit is an artistic collaboration initially conceived in 2004 by David Burns, Matias Viegener, and Austin Young. Since 2013, David and Austin have continued the partnership. Attracted by the relationship between public space, citizenship, and fruit, Fallen Fruit is based in Los Angeles, USA, but its interventions are developed internationally, focusing particularly on Latin America.

The work Banana Hotline was created for TEDActive and stems from the artists’ concern with the extinction of the banana tree because of the Panama disease, caused by the monoculture of a single variety of bananas. It is a collaborative work that pays homage to the banana by creating an archive of memories from collective memory. In the installation, a stuffed banana with a tape recorder inside was passed among the audience to record their memories of bananas. The audio recordings were made available on a website.
