In Errand and a Treat (2021), Lucía Hierro constructs a seemingly simple scene that brings together everyday consumer goods against a saturated, flattened backdrop, evoking both the aesthetics of advertising and the structure of a contemporary still life. A bunch of bananas, plant-based milk, wrappers, and small packaged items are arranged within a compressed space where scale and materiality have been transformed through felt, foam, and digital print on brushed suede. The composition recalls the familiar experience of “running an errand and getting a treat,” capturing the act of shopping as a moment shaped by choice, desire, and domestic economy.
The banana occupies a central position within this constellation of objects, functioning as a point of balance between nourishment and accessibility. In contrast to more processed or industrial products, the fruit retains a perceived continuity with its origin, even as it is fully embedded within urban consumption systems. Hierro places these elements in relation to one another, highlighting how different economies—fresh and packaged, essential and indulgent—coexist within the daily realities of working-class and diasporic communities. The work resists hierarchy, presenting all items as part of a shared material ecology of consumption.
As in her broader practice, Hierro employs soft materials and textile-based processes to translate familiar images into tactile, enduring objects. This shift from commercial imagery to sculptural form introduces a tension between representation and presence, image and object. In Errand and a Treat, the banana becomes part of a narrative of the everyday in which the most ordinary actions—purchasing, choosing, carrying home—emerge as acts through which identity and belonging are continuously shaped.
