In Bandera (2023), Salvadoran artist Víctor Cruz & Hugo Portillo distills an entire geopolitical history into the simplest of gestures: a banana leaf affixed to a twig with duct tape. The resulting structure, fragile and makeshift, is described by the artist as “precarious, unbalanced, about to give way.” Yet its fragility is precisely the point. The work stands as both object and allegory—a flag improvised from what is at hand, asserting presence amid scarcity, and quietly exposing the instability of the social and political systems it evokes.

The banana leaf, long an emblem of the “tropical paradise” and a visual shorthand for the colonial imagination, becomes here a counter-symbol: instead of lush abundance, it suggests exhaustion and endurance. By reworking the materials of cliché into a declaration of survival, Víctor Cruz & Hugo Portillo transforms the very language of representation. The flag’s structure resists grandeur or permanence; its duct-taped joints testify to the provisional ways in which marginalized communities hold themselves together under systems of economic dependence and global extraction.

Photographed against a cream-white background, Bandera carries an unsettling elegance, as if the image belonged in a fashion campaign or design catalogue. This deliberate tension—between protest and polish, critique and desire—complicates how we consume images of the “tropical.” Portillo’s flag does not wave; it hovers, suspended between collapse and persistence. It is a silent act of resistance, a reminder that even the most fragile gestures can bear the weight of history.
