In Monólogo brevísimo (2021), Salvadoran artist Víctor Cruz & Hugo Portillo condenses a story of migration and resilience into three quiet images. A banana plant stands improbably in a snowy field, its tropical leaves stiffened by the cold. In the next frame, those same leaves lie on concrete—cut, flattened, and ready to be transformed. The sequence closes with a small domestic scene: the banana leaves have become tamales. The accompanying text reads like a haiku of survival—“Hace unos días sembré una planta de bananas… Entonces, le corté las hojas, e hice tamales”—turning adaptation itself into an art form.

The work unfolds as a meditation on displacement and resourcefulness. To plant a banana tree in frozen soil is to perform both hope and futility; to cut it down and cook with its leaves is to reimagine continuity under duress. Víctor Cruz & Hugo Portillo’s poetic narration transforms failure into sustenance, capturing the instinct to make do, to create nourishment from what resists growth. Between the field, the pavement, and the kitchen, the work maps the journey from dream to adjustment, from aspiration to subsistence.

Monólogo brevísimo is at once modest and profound—a visual parable of diasporic endurance. Its rhythm mirrors that of migration itself: the initial transplantation, the recognition of incompatibility, and the reconfiguration of identity through practice and care. What remains is not the fruit, but the gesture—the insistence that even in inhospitable ground, something of the original root persists, feeding memory and possibility alike.
